Herbert E. Waltermire, 88, of Great Falls, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 of natural causes at a local care facility. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 1:00 PM in the Rose Room Chapel at Croxford Funeral Home.

Born July 29, 1929 in Seattle, WA to William and Eve (Oslund) Waltermire. He had three siblings, Robert, Marjorie and Richard; and children, Wendy, Debra, Belinda, Michael and Michele. He and his loving wife, Alexandra (Walker) Waltermire were married for 64 years that brought, 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild on the way.

Herb’s family moved to Missoula when he was 8 and he completed grade school and high school, graduating from Missoula County High School. He went on to attend U of M, graduating in 1952 with a degree in business administration. Herb’s first job after college, was being an office manager for Wilburn Timber Co. in Helmville. He then took a job as the office and credit manager for Firestone in Missoula.

On March 22, 1953 he married his college sweetheart Alexandra Walker at the First Presbyterian Church in Missoula. His first child Wendy was born on December 25 in Missoula. 18 months later his second daughter Debra was born. The family then moved to Superior, MT where he was the office manager for Bache & Grames Logging. Two years later Firestone offered him the job of office and credit manager in Helena, and the family moved there. Then Belinda joined the family in 1959. A son was welcomed into the family in 1962 followed by a fourth daughter, Michele two years later to complete the family.

In 1961, Herb began a career with the state of Montana job service, starting as an interviewer in the local office in Helena. He filled many positions in Job Service at the State level and finished his career in Great Falls. He gave much of his time to community service, both while still working and even more when retired, taking positions as President of the Uptown Optimist Club and District Secretary Treasurer for MT, WY, and Sask. District. He was a board member of the Great Falls Pre-Release and Chairman of the Board for many years. Herb also served as Chairman of the United Way Campaign, a board member for the Boys Scouts of America, and was awarded with the Silver Beaver for service. Along with that he twice served as Interim Director of the Boys & Girls Club while the board did a job search for a new permanent director.  Still yet as a man of great faith he found time to take a seat on the Deacon Board for Valley Community Bible Church.

Herb was truly an instrument in forming a charitable board of prominent Great Falls people which gives grants to organizations like the Girl Scouts, Boys & Girls Club, as well as providing college scholarships to deserving students.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert & Richard; sister, Marjorie and brother-in-law, Robert Ashenbrenner; and nephew, James Waltermire.

He is survived in passing by his beloved wife of 64 years, Alexandra; daughters, Wendy (Mick) Katolas, Debra (Les) Pichelman, Belinda (Mike) Byrd, Michele (Jim) Brown; son, Michael (D’on) Waltermire; eight grandchildren, Brandy (Allen) Huntington, Nicholas Katolas, Trevor Bartosik, Tessa (Jon) Wimmer, Alexandra Malone, Stephanie (Dan) Gordon, Alicia & Breanna Brown, and 13 great-grandchildren. He was eagerly awaiting his great-great-grandchild due in November.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to Great Falls Food Bank or the Uptown Optimists Childhood Cancer Fund.
