Joseph Reacy Von Stein

Joseph Reacy Von Stein passed away on April 16, 2018 following a massive stroke. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Cascade with a luncheon to follow.

Joe was born April 1, 1942 to Floyd and Lillian (Luoma) Von Stein. His father worked for Montana Power so the family moved several times during his childhood. He had fond memories of his time living at Ryan Dam and summers spent on his uncles’ ranches in Geyser. Joe graduated from Cascade High School in 1960 and joined the Navy in 1961. After discharge in 1963, he returned to Cascade and met Patricia James and followed her to college at Montana State University in Bozeman where they were married on September 5, 1965. He went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from MSU.

After graduation, he and Pat moved to Libby where he worked on the Libby Dam as an engineer. In 1971, they moved back to Cascade to take over the James family ranch where Joe spent his life farming and ranching. He was very resourceful and designed and built many things for the operation.
Joe was an avid reader, a talented woodworker and recently had developed an interest in gold panning. He also took great pride in reporting the weather for the National Weather Service. He was recognized for over 45 years of service as a volunteer weather observer.

Joe loved to visit with friends and enjoyed attending community events. He treasured his time with family during their annual get together at the lake. In recent years, keeping up with the activities of his grandsons became a real priority.

Joe is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Patricia; his parents; and his sister Barbara. He is survived by his sister, Carol (Dean) Kienenberger; sons, Joseph (Shelley) Von Stein of Big Sandy and Steven Von Stein of Cascade; daughter, Jill (Trent) Howard of Mandan, ND; and grandsons, Cutter and Holden Howard and Reed and Rhett Von Stein.

Memorials can be made to the Wedsworth Memorial Library in Cascade, Cascade Volunteer Fire Department or Peace Hospice in Great Falls.
