Matthew R. McCale, longtime coach and teacher at Centerville School, passed away on Tuesday morning, September 26, 2017 after a lengthy illness. He was 61.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who valued family, friends, and the community in Centerville.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 30, at 1:00 pm at the Centerville School Gymnasium. Military Honors will be performed by the U.S. Navy.

Matt was born July 18, 1956 in Philipsburg, where he grew up and graduated from Granite High School. After high school, he joined the Navy as a technician on nuclear subs. He then attended the University of Montana and earned a bachelor’s degree in History and Physical Education in 1978. Later he earned a master’s degree in School Administration from the U of M in 2000. Matt and his wife Karla, moved to Sand Coulee in 1982 where both were hired as teachers at Centerville School. Matt taught high school history and P.E. for 18 years and finished his career as Centerville School principal until he retired in 2013.

Coaching high school sports was Matt’s passion. He coached basketball for 18 years, football for 30 years and track for 10 years. He loved his students and instilled his love and competitiveness for the game. Matt had a big heart with a particular soft spot for children who were somewhat down on their luck. He would go above and beyond whatever it took to make sure all students succeeded. Matt was a member of the Montana Coaches Association for 31 years. He was also the District 8C President for several years and was voted Athletic Director of the Year.

He had a special affection for pets, including his dog, Bella.

He loved the outdoors. Camping, boating, and fishing were among his favorite activities with his family. He also enjoyed golfing with his wife and friends. Matt’s love for the Green Bay Packers was well known by all who loved Matt.

Matt had two granddaughters, Jayleigh – age 3, and Dakota – age 2. Matt’s favorite pastime was spending all the time he could with his granddaughters. Matt was also excited for the birth of his third grandchild, who will be born this winter.

He was married to Karla Miller, who was his high school sweetheart. Matt and Karla were married August, 8, 1981 at Georgetown Lake, Philipsburg, MT. They were blessed with two children, Levi McCale, and Sarah Schilling. Matt’s children still live close and were able to spend quality family time together.

Matt is survived by his devoted wife, Karla McCale; son, Levi McCale (Danielle); daughter, Sarah Schilling (Michael); granddaughters, Jayleigh Schilling and Dakota McCale. Also surviving is a sister, Danette LaTray (Bob); and their children.

Matt is proceeded in death by his father, William McCale and mother, Florence McCale. The bond between Matt and Florence was unbreakable, even in death. Florence followed Matt to his heavenly father just hours after Matt’s passing on September 26, 2017.
