Salt Lake City – Dorothy (Dort) Sigvardt passed away peacefully on August 28, 2016 surrounded by her family. A Memorial Service was held September 10, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church, Salt Lake City, Utah. An internment service will be held May 6, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Highland Cemetery, with Pastor Ken Waag officiating, for both Dort and her husband, Bruce.

Dort was born to Henry S. and Alma (Ballestad) Enochson on November 9, 1933 in Great Falls, graduating from Great Falls High School in 1952. Dort married Bruce A. Sigvardt on April 25, 1953. They moved to Salt Lake City, UT in 1962 to further their education. Dort received her Bachelor of Arts Degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1974, her Master of Arts in Speech Pathology in 1976, and her Administrative/ Supervisory Certificate in 1987, all at the University of Utah, while raising their 4 children.

Dort’s caring for those in need began with the Cascade County Welfare Department in Montana as a Secretary. There she met the love of her life, Bruce, who was a caseworker and her boss. After they wed, and for 3 years following, they became the administrators of the Cascade County Convalescent Hospital in Montana. Dort’s love of children helped shape her career.  She and Bruce were co-directors of the Grand Mesa Easter Seals Camp for children with disabilities in Grand Mesa, Colorado for 7 years.  She spent 21 joyful years, with the Salt Lake City School District, serving as a Communication Disorders Specialist, coordinator of the Severe Handicapped Program, and finally, consultant for the disabled students in several schools.  She retired in 1997.

Dort was a member of the Utah chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, the Zeta Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and Lynd’s chapter of Eastern Star.

Dort loved her family, spending time in her yard, and making hand-dipped chocolates and treats. She was famous for her Christmas plates of cookies and sweets that she made especially for her family, friends and neighbors.  She enjoyed traveling, cruising and visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Brendt A. Sigvardt of Tooele, UT; daughters, Brenda J. Friedley (Mark) of Taylorsville, UT; Deanna S. Outsen (Matt) of Nibley, UT; Linda J. Sigvardt of Murray, UT; her 7 granddaughters, Mary Wiberg (Kirk); Lindsey Thompson; Chandler Johnson; Lauren Sigvardt; AshleyGrae, Sydney and McKinley Outsen; and 2 great-grandchildren, Ross and Lirael Wiberg.
