Virdene Ione Zook

Virdene Ione Zook, 81, earned her angel wings on August 29, 2019 with her family by her side.  Virdene was born on September 25, 1937, at home in rural North Dakota to Olivia and Alvin Skramstad, the youngest of three older siblings, Avanell, Harold and Lyle.  She resided most of her childhood years on the family farm near Benedict, ND.  She had many memories of growing up on the farm, but she always said her life began when she met Marlow, the love of her life, at the age of 16.  They had a short courtship and married on July 24, 1954.  Marlow and Virdene had five children within seven years, so life was busy at the Zook home.  Virdene took pride in being a wife, mother and homemaker.  She was exceptional at managing household finances, cooking and baking always from scratch, canning, sewing and mending.

Virdene was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, Just-A-Mere Pinochle Club and the SRV Historical Society.  She served the community as a 4-H leader, president of SRV Senior Center, a volunteer at the Council for Aging, and named outstanding volunteer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program for her twenty years of service.  Virdene also worked part-time as a seamstress and at the Election polls for several years.

Virdene loved to travel and had many fond memories of family trips to visit relatives, camping and staying with Marlow at out-of-town work sites.  Marlow and Virdene also enjoyed going to the Moose Club for dining and dancing on the weekends.

Virdene was especially proud and happy being “Grandma Zook”.  She loved to play pinochle and was always up for a game of Yahtzee.

She is survived by her children:  Carolyn (Wes) Sheldon, Marlon (Bonnie) Zook, Nancy Lee and Valerie (Tim) Croft; Grandchildren:  Leslie (Justin) Brown, Stephanie (Jon) Giles, Jeff (Cheree) Sheldon, Ben (Quinn) Sheldon, Aimee (Robby) Carnesecca, Lindsey (Marc) Mahoney, Michael (Sarah) Zook, Kevin Lee, Darren Lee, Vince (Sydney) Lee, Canyon Croft and Bridger Croft.  She is also survived by 33 great-grandchildren and her dear companion dog, Shelly.

Virdene was preceded in death by her husband; son, Curtis; brother, Harold and her parents.

The family extends a special thank you to Sue for her loving care, support and friendship.  

Virdene loved life and was a warrior to the very end, always hopeful and smiling.  Please join our family in her Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Croxford Funeral Home.  Burial will be at the Sun River Cemetery following the service.
