Betty was born in Missoula, Montana on January 13, 1934 to Moody Copenhaver and Elizabeth Edwards. She attended High School here in her later years. Betty did a stellar job in all her classes. Her passion for education only grew over the years. So much so, that after graduating high school, she went on to pursue a career in education. In 1954, she attended WMCE in Dillon, MT and began teaching on a 2-year elementary teaching certificate. A few years later in 1971, she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in education from the college of Great Falls. That was only the beginning for Betty. She went back to school attending Eastern MT College in Billings, MT where she got her Masters Degree plus 45 additional credits. With her new accomplishments, she went to teach her first 2 years in Deer Lodge, MT, 1 year in Browning, and the remaining 32 years of her career in Great Falls, MT. After 37 years of teaching, she went into retirement.
Betty had a strong passion for antiques. She would attend antique showings, garage and estate sales, and antique auctions. She loved going to concerts and listening to music. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Her family only grew when John Claassen came into her life. His family adopted Betty as one of their own and made many years of wonderful memories. It was through them that she learned to fish at 80 years old. She also found a home in the Black Eagle Assiniboine Chapter, Daughters of American Revolution and the Montana Mayflower Society. She was an active member in both of these groups, dedicating years of her life to help them flourish.
Family and heritage were always important to Betty. She was passionate about her family tree and did not let the rest of her family forget where they came from. Through her work, she learned she was the 11th descendent of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens-Alden. Betty was a truly unique person, and her memory will live on through all who loved her.
Betty is survived by her son, Randall D. Roe of Everett, WA; numerous nieces and nephews along with their children and grandchildren in western Montana; and her special friend, John Claassen and his family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Moody and Elizabeth; her son, Jerry Owen Roe; her sisters, Louise Copenhaver Brunett, and Leona; and her brothers, Eugene, Howard, Lawrence, Wendell, and Leon Copenhaver.
There will be a Memorial Service to honor Betty's life on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 11AM in Croxford Funeral Home's Rose Room Chapel. A Reception will follow at Croxford's with a Graveside Service at Highland Cemetery starting at 1PM.
