Ernest Duane Hannula passed peacefully away on Friday, October 15, 2021, at Benefis, surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 22nd at 2:00 PM in the Rose Room Chapel at Croxford Funeral Home with a Graveside at Manchester Cemetery at 4:00 PM.
Duane was born in Anaconda, MT on August 30, 1940. Around the age of two the family moved to Pierre, South Dakota. He was a teenager when they moved to Great Falls, MT where he became a “Bison” for life.
At age 16, while in high school, Duane began working for Carl Weissman and Sons. After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1959, he continued working for Weissman’s in various managerial roles for over 40 years. He also worked at Steel Etc. until retiring.
Duane spent most of his time with family, friends, and his dog, King, hunting and fishing. In 1964 he purchased land and built a cabin on the Smith River. It was a great source of pride for Duane. He especially loved sharing experiences with family and friends at the cabin.
A devoted fan of baseball, basketball and football, he followed the Great Falls Pioneer League Dodgers and Giants, the Denver Broncos and the LA Dodgers. He was an avid Great Falls High Bison fan. He enjoyed shooting pool with his friends and family in his basement and was always up for a card game at the cabin.
Survivors include his brother, Mike (Susan) Hannula of Great Falls; nieces, Kim (Matt) Anderson and Sarah (Eric) Bloomgren; great nieces, Olivia Anderson and Hannah and Ava Bloomgren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Helen; stepmother, Jean; sister, Cheryl; niece, Krista and great niece, Sophia Anderson.
Duane’s family would like to thank Dr. Onstad, Dr. Tang and all the doctors, nurses and staff on the 6th floor at Benefis. Thank you for the wonderful compassion, care and love you showed to Duane in his final months. Duane was a mighty Bison so we welcome those attending his service to wear Bison colors or attire.
