Hoby Phillips Obituary

Hoby Phillips, 62 of Vaughn Montana, passed away Thursday, May 16th at his residence of natural causes. The family will be holding a celebration of Hoby’s life, and the date and time will be announced at a later date.

Hoby Lee Phillips was born July 22nd, 1961 in Choteau, Montana to Wilbur (Bud) Phillips and June Trebesch, then raised in Vaughn, Montana. As a child he admired his parents and spent time at the racetrack where his parents trained racehorses for many years. They also took adventures in the backroads of Montana to explore locations to hunt and fish. Together they made everlasting memories that influenced Hoby’s life and passions. He attended Simms High School and graduated in 1979. Hoby later worked as a Gate crewman and then a paddock judge for the racetrack. Clay Loney Concrete hired him with great admiration for his drive to work ethic. Finally, Hoby was a Tire Tech at Mountain View Co-Op for his final years. He was a resident of Montana his whole life.
“I’m in love with Montana. For other states, I have admiration, respect, recognition, and even some affection. But with Montana, it is love. And it’s difficult to analyze a love when you're in it.”-John Steinbeck.

Hoby was very passionate about hunting in the rocky mountains (Home Gulch, Back Country) in the fall. Fishing in the clear streams, lakes and rivers, in a peaceful secluded area away from society. Hoby enjoyed camping, boating, and horseback riding in the vast mountains with his family. His most memorable quote was “Suck it up buttercup.” In the last couple of years, Hoby had taken up woodworking.

Survivors by sons, Brandon Gabelt (39) and Austin Gabelt (30); Daughters Misti (Vogt) Boker (38) (Jeff), and Katlyn Phillips (28); Brother Kurt Phillips (65); Granddaughters Scarlett (9) and Willow (6) Those who have preceded Hoby in death are his parents Wilbur (Bud) Phillips and June Phillips.
