Margaret Miller Obituary

Watch Live Here

Our sweet “Grandma Maggie”, 89, of Great Falls,  slipped quietly away on Saturday, October 17, 2020 after being exposed to COVID at her dementia care facility.   A heart weakened from a failing replacement valve she was no match against this heartless flu.  A private family Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 28th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Rose Room Chapel at Croxford Funeral Home with Livestream available for family and friends.

Born Margaret Lydia Muir on May 4, 1931 in Toledo, OH to Boyd Benjamin and Calista “Betty” (Taylor) Muir, Maggie was the second oldest of six children.  Growing up during the Depression, what they lacked in money was more than made up for with the love and devotion of family.  She graduated from Clay High School in 1949 and began nursing school the following year.  She met Glen Irving Miller in her second year of school, and on June 30, 1952 they were married, leaving nursing school behind to become a loving wife.  Maggie said she always wanted six children, one girl, one boy, twin girls and twin boys.  But God had other plans and on August 15, 1953 they welcomed their only child, a son, Gale Elmer Miller into their lives, and the fun began.  The love she would have given to all those children was instead shared freely with her adored grandchildren.

Maggie stayed at home for the first few years of Gale’s life, enjoying motherhood.  As time went by, she felt the need to help supplement the family income, and took a job as a dental assistant, training on the job, with Dr. Gowan in Toledo, OH.  She would work there for the next 20 years, until his retirement.  Husband Glen worked for the Washington Township School District as a Superintendent of Maintenance, so it was only natural for her to look to the same place for employment.  She became a crossing guard and playground supervisor for the school district before working as a parking lot guard at Whitmer High School until her retirement. Maggie loved people, so after retiring, she volunteered at Flower Hospital in Toledo for four years, before moving to Missoula, MT in 2005 to be next to her son after Glen’s death, and volunteering at Community Hospital for another three years.

Summer vacations were spent with Glen and Gale traveling and camping around the country, making great memories and eventually reaching 48 states.  Their son, Gale moved to Montana to go to the University of Montana, fell in love with the state and a local girl, and never looked back.  Now vacations meant traveling to Montana to spend time with their grandchildren or arranging for them to fly out to spend time with them in Ohio.  When Gale and family moved to Hawaii for several years, Maggie and Glen just hopped on a plane and happily spent time in the islands with their favorite family.

When not on the phone chatting with one of her many friends, Maggie enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing plastic canvas (her “Hugging is Healthy” signs were a favorite), and writing letters.  She loved football, especially her Green Bay Packers and Bart Starr!! She was a sweet, kind, loving woman who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Bette Miller of Great Falls, MT; grandchildren, Toby (Candase) Miller of Spokane, WA, Reid (Bri Spencer) Miller of Bellingham, WA, Clark Miller of Mesa, ,AZ and Maggie (Drew) Kent of Great Falls, MT; eleven great-grandchildren, Ben, Jacob (Aileen), Jared, Hailey, Broden, Jaxin, Liam, twins Lyla & Lucy, Max, Xavier;  two, great-great-grandsons, Ash and James; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Those who have preceded her in death include her parents; her beloved husband, Glen; son, Gale; brothers, Rev. James August Muir, George Emerson Muir, Paul Boyd Muir and David Albert Muir and sister, Betty Ruth Mariah Muir Stallings.
