Marvin Joe Benjamin was born May 17, 1958, to Harry and Jeane Benjamin in Shelby, Montana, and was the fifth of seven children. He died of natural causes at his home in Lewistown, Montana, on June 25, 2024.
He grew up on the family farm south of Devon, where he attended Devon grade school. The family moved to Kalispell in 1974, and Marvin was active in FFA, eventually serving as Chapter President. Soon after graduating from Flathead High School in 1976, he moved to California to work for his uncle Roy Fortune at his concrete plant. While in California he met Sue Mason, and after a short courtship, they were married and returned to Montana. Marvin and Sue established their family of four children while farming at the family homestead in Devon, Montana. In 1990, they sold the farm to his brother Cliff, and moved to the Gallatin Valley where he pursued his degree in Business Finance and Accounting from Montana State University. Marvin worked in a variety of roles including management, steel fabrication and sales, trucking, farm equipment parts, seasonal farm hand, and ultimately substitute teaching.
Marvin’s faith-life deeply influenced who he was. From deep spiritual conversations to visiting and having fellowship with friends, his service to God was a constant throughout his life. Marvin loved people, and knew no strangers! There was always a bright twinkle in his eye, a heart-warming smile on his face, and a heart-felt handshake that left you feeling important and appreciated. His passions and hobbies included music (especially anything with good drumming and rhythm, or good harmony); serving others, cooking, canning, enjoying good food, keeping sourdough and sauerkraut; and learning and coaching others. Hosting exchange students was a highlight for a few years, and he has kept in contact with Pamela from Italy, and Wendy from The Netherlands. Visiting them in their home countries was an unrealized dream. He will always be remembered for his hours-long phone conversations and staying connected with his brothers and close friends.
Some of Marvin’s proudest accomplishments included his children and grandchildren, his custom-painted international truck and pup trailer, being president of the Students Over Traditional Age (SOTA) club while in college, being on the search committee for a new Dean of the College of Business, Toastmasters, trips to visit family including two trips to Mexico, and simply helping others at every opportunity.
Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Harry Benjamin and cousin Roberta Clouser. He is survived by his mother, Jeane Fortune Benjamin, his six brothers and sisters: Jerry (Julie Lynn), Lloyd (Jenny), Clifford (Jewell), Marlene, Shirley Vandermyden, Steve (Julie), cousin Juanita Clouser Anderson; former wife Sue and their four children: Keith (Melinda), Dale (Kari), Kay (Todd) Kitto, Rick (Julia), and fourteen grandchildren: Tyler, Rowena, Aiden, Boyd, Mari, Monte, Kate, Alex, Emory, Kendra, Melody, Ryan, Zane, and Aura.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Croxford Funeral Home in Great Falls, MT, with a luncheon and reception to follow. A private interment will follow at the Devon Cemetery.
