Michael Flaherty Obituary

Michael Francis Flaherty, 82, passed away in Great Falls, MT on Thursday, November, 07, 2024.

Michael was born on July 29, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York to Henry Francis Flaherty and Veronica Sandberg. He would play kickball with brooms in the streets of Brooklyn with his friends. Once he became of age, Michael joined the United States Air Force where he was an aircraft mechanic for T-37 trainer planes. He did this for the next 4 years before his honorable discharge.

Micheal moved away to find a new home in Texas, living in both Del Rio and Abilene for quite some time. Del Rio is where he met Belia Molano. They shared their vows in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico on May 15, 1965 and spent the next 54 years loving every moment spent together. Following Belia’s passing in 2019, Michael moved to Great Falls, MT where he spent the remaining 5 years of his life near his daughter and her family.

Michael was extremely talented when it came to working with his hands. He did carpentry and construction work for various companies, family, and his own house. Michael did not let age, or his medical issues slow him down. He built a wooden fence, storage units and bird houses throughout his years.

Michael had a knack for gardening as well. He grew plants and vegetables that he incorporated into his cooking on Sunday family gatherings. Michael especially liked making his famous New York spaghetti and meatballs that everyone loved! One thing he always wanted to do was hunt in Montana. His wish was fulfilled 2 weeks before he passed.

Michael is survived by his daughter, Jessica (Ben) Rice; his sisters, Peggy Ghezzi and Christine Lahey; his grandchildren and his great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Flaherty and Veronica Sandberg; his brother, Charles Lahey; and his grandparents: Mary Walsh, William Flaherty, Anna Kane, and Gustave Marenus Sandberg.
