Verna J. (Allum) Larson, 78, of Fairfield passed away Thursday, February 13th, 2020. With family by her side she knew it was her time to go Home to be with Jesus. She battled many years of heart and dementia issues as a result of her respiratory related illness. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 18th at 11AM at the Fairfield United Church of Christ. A private burial will be held at a later date. Croxford Funeral Home of Great Falls is handling arrangements.
Verna was born in Choteau, MT on September 24, 1941 to parents Clarence Richard Allum and Dorothy Marie Culp. After graduating from Choteau High School in 1959 she married the love of her life Arthur “Art” Larson on October 1st, 1959, and they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage together. She lived within the communities of Choteau and Fairfield most of her life with brief stays in Augusta and Lincoln.
She was the Head kitchen cook at Fairfield Schools for 20 years and Choteau Senior Center for 10 years. During those years she supplemented income by selling Avon and worked as a Score Keeper for bowling leagues at the Aragon Bar and Bowl. She worked at Walmart as a Greeter until she was injured and had to retire.
Always cooking, baking and sharing her Christmas goodies she was more fondly known throughout the communities for her expertise knitting, crocheting and quilting. She truly loved and enjoyed making beautiful handcrafted lap robes and afghans to donate to the local nursing homes and hospital in Choteau, to the Montana Veteran’s Home in Columbia Falls, for fundraisers, and gifts to family and friends. She made over 300 of these pieces of art after she retired. Family and friends still hold precious to their hearts the beautiful quilts she made.
Besides knitting and crocheting, her favorite hobbies were fishing, camping, reading Western Novels especially by author Louis L’aMour and A.B. Guthrie and playing games. She was very competitive and loved to beat her grandkids in a good game of Skip-Bo. She spent many hours typing and keeping journals of family history and was very proud and honored to have inherited her Great-Grandfathers Civil War medals. She enjoyed attending family reunions, but she treasured most the times she got to travel and visit her relatives in Illinois and spending time with her kids, grandkids and two great-grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Dorothy Allum; brothers Ray, Dick, Ed and Ben; sisters Hazel Westfall, Betty Fenner and half-sister Gertrude Fairchild.
She is survived by her husband Arthur “Art” Larson of Fairfield, Daughter Bobbi (Rich) Beerman of Power, William “Bill” (Denise) Larson of Helena; grandchildren Amanda Beerman, Lacey Beerman, Dusti (Cole) Smith, Clayton “Clay” Beerman, Steven “Zack” (Hanna) Larson; and two adorable great grandkids Josie “Jojo” and Wylie Smith. Brother Frank (Lourdes) Allum of Great Falls, Sharon (Glen) Larson of Choteau and Ruth Bullock of Columbia Falls.
